Freight Data Portal for the North Central Pennsylvania Region

North Central Pennsylvania’s economy is driven by agriculture, raw material extraction and processing, and manufacturing. These employment sectors are primary users of freight services and generally ship and receive volume by truck. Trucks in turn transport and operate on the region’s roadways. These include 66 miles of Interstate 80 across the region’s southern half, and US 6, which provides mobility across the region’s northern half. North-south mobility and interconnectivity is provided primarily by US 219. The region is also served by Class I and regional railroads, and two general aviation airport facilities.

The performance of this extraordinary network helps promote and support a thriving economy. NorthCentralFreightAtlas is a resource for exploring and tracking this regional freight network.

Freight Planning at NCPRPDC

The NorthCentralFreightAtlas is a product of the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission’s (NCPRPDC) continuing, comprehensive freight planning program. This program enables carriers, shippers and economic development agencies to participate in the transportation planning process and identify freight-related transportation trends and needs in the region.

The overarching strategic direction for freight policies and impacts in the North Central Pennsylvania region is outlined in the 2020 North Central Regional Freight Plan. The plan’s intent is to serve as a blueprint for the regional decision-making on planning for freight-related transportation infrastructure and includes a long-term spending plan for addressing those needs over the next 25 years.

Open Freight App

The North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission (NCPRPDC) would like to extend its sincere thanks to the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) for developing and sharing the Open Freight App framework that serves as the basis for the North Central Freight Atlas. NCPRPDC leveraged the Open Freight App framework as part of its 2020 Regional Freight Plan update, rather than building a new tool from scratch, to improve access to information on regional freight facilities in North Central Pennsylvania. As a rural planning agency serving a large 6-county region, this data and resource sharing was invaluable to NCPRPDC’s transportation planning program.
